The Importance And Benefits of Prayer

I cannot imagine not knowing the benefits of prayer. I guess because from the time I can remember, my parents taught me to pray. I am thankful for parents who knew that prayer was always the answer to all of our needs. They never taught me that we get everything we pray for, but the necessity of taking everything to God in Prayer.  This does not mean that everything is always wonderful within my life, it simply means that I know where to go for comfort, while knowing the importance and benefits of Prayer.

On Facebook today, I saw a post that indicates that Vice President Pence had indicated that healthcare was not the only thing needed in America. The post stated that he said that America needed God’s care. Maybe not in these exact words, but something very similar.

Nothing could be more the truth for America as we see more and more decisive behavior regarding Christianity and anything to do with God. Prayer and repentance is needed most in America, if you believe in God at all.

Self-improvement courses may help a person become more aware of themselves in certain ways. However, if there is no spiritual involvement in this aspect of life, it will not take care of that deep, inner need for peace that only God can deliver.

I know that not all people can believe that. When God took the time to make the earth to the exact parameter of survival, and all living creatures, I do not think He would miss giving them a soul that can only be satisfied with knowing and believing in Him.

We know from the scriptures that there is only one way to know Jesus. That is by prayer, faith, and obedience. We know that the first step is to pray for forgiveness, and believe on Him.

There is scripture that states “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” Isaiah 26:3

Of course, there is only one way to have perfect peace, and that is through prayer and faith in the scriptures He has given us to dwell on.

In Psalms, it looks like David prayed more than anyone you read about. He knew the value of praying. He knew that when he sinned, being honest in his sins and asking for God’s forgiveness again was important. He was not always righteous, but God loved his humble nature of asking forgiveness over, and over again.

The Importance of Prayer

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known unto God.” Philippians 4:6

“Pray without ceasing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17

“The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon Him, to all that call upon Him in truth.” Psalms 145:18

The Power of Prayer

“If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” John 15:7

“And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those thing that are pleasing in his sight.” 1 John 3:22

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be mad3e known unto God.” Philippians 4: 6-7

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” Jeremiah 29: 11

“And this is the confidence that we have in him that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us. 1 John 5:14

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not: and it shall be given him.” James 1:5

We see here that most of these power acts of Prayer are with the stipulation that we keep his commandments, ask according to his will, and “if we abide in Him.”

Silent Prayer

It is not always necessary that we pray aloud, so that other people hear us. The Bible states to enter into thy closet to pray in secret and He will reward thee openly. Matthew 6:6

“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” Romans 8: 26

There is so much in the Bible about how to pray, how to believe when we pray, and how to eliminate fear within our lives. There is a positive answer for every negative situation that exists. That does not mean that we do not suffer from loss, from pain, from those unexpected things that take our breath away, but with prayer and supplication, we can find some rest.

I have had times when I could not say aloud any words. All I could do was think in my mind; Lord, help me.

How We Ought To Pray

In Luke 18 – there is scripture after scripture that gives us examples of how men ought to always pray:

1
 And he spake a parable unto them [to this end], that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;

2 Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man:

3 And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary.

4 And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man;

5 Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.

6 And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith.

7 And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?

8 I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:…see the rest of the chapter.
